Lyz’s writing has appeared in the Huffington Post, The Washington Post, the Columbia Journalism Review, The New York Times, Pacific Standard, and others. Her book God Land was published in 2019, through Indiana University Press. Her second book Belabored, was published in 2020 by Bold Type Books. Lyz’s essay “All the Angry Women” was also included in the anthology Not that Bad edited by Roxane Gay (Gay teaches a MasterClass on writing). Lyz received her MFA in creative writing from Lesley University. She lives in Iowa with her two kids, two cats and one dog.
Lenz earned a national reputation for her writing and reporting for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. She was fired last year, although no one is saying why. Whoever did that made a big mistake, in my opinion.
Lenz has joined the ranks of the happily-unemployable. Her column via Substack is featured as one of the most popular. Syndicated Columnist Connie Schultz recommended one of her essays in a Tweet.
The truth of the firing might be found in the title of her column, ‘Men Yell at Me’.
From getting yelled at by the founder of Axios, to lactating in front of Anderson Cooper, Lyz’s weekly newsletter shows the weird, fun, horrible reality behind a lifetime of writing.
Joe Biden once called her a “real sweetheart.”
Alan Dershowitz called her “fifth rate.”
The Iowa GOP called her “Crass and unprofessional.”
