Dartanyan Brown

    Dartanyan Brown is an Iowa native whose career as a journalist, musician and Interdisciplinary teaching artist has taken him on an incredible personal journey. A vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and song writer, Dartanyan began his music career with Harlan Thomas and the Soul Brothers in 1967 but by 1973 he was featured with Grammy-nominated Jazz-Fusion band Chase. A Drake J-School grad, Dartanyan began his career as a teaching Artist with the Iowa Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts’ 1979 Jazz Artist In Schools program. His experience in the classroom encompasses both public and private education in the K-12 and collegiate.

    Dartanyan is an inductee into Iowa’s Rock ’n Roll and Blues Halls of Fame and he joins his father, the late Ellsworth Brown, as a member of Central Iowa’s Jazz Hall of Fame.

    His writing career began as a cub reporter at the Des Moines Register in 1967 where worked in the Sports department eventually becoming a general assignment reporter. Moving to the San Francisco Bay Area during the dawn of the personal computer age, he served as a staff writer for Ziff-Davis Publishing, which produced MacWEEK, a Silicon Valley news weekly covering Steve Jobs and all things Mac.

    Dartanyan’s career has touched live and recorded music, sound design, technology, and education. As a sound designer, he has created sounds for projects as diverse as early 90’s projects with Random House/Living Books and a 2022 collaboration with video artist Yorame Mevorach for the Des Moines Art Center.
