Katharine Sands

Literary Agent

Workshops: 1. Master-Pitch Theatre. 2. Getting Ready • Getting Read • Getting Readers

Katharine Sands is a literary agent with the Sarah Jane Freymann Agency in New York City and the “agent provocateur” of “Making the Perfect Pitch: How to Catch a Literary Agent’s Eye.” She has been a guest speaker for Poets & Writers, The American Society of Journalists and Authors, UCLA, New York University, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Her author list spans fiction, memoir, and nonfiction, including “The Apothecary’s Curse” by Bram Stoker Award nominee Barbara Barnett, “Girl Walks Out of a Bar” by Lisa Smith (People notable non-fiction), teenage climate activist Jamie Margolin’s “Youth to Power,” Jessica Doyle-Mekkes’s “I’m Speaking,” and “The Secret Life of Beats” by legendary drummer Will Calhoun.

Katharine looks for books that bring a clear benefit to readers’ lives in food, travel, lifestyle, home arts, beauty, wisdom, relationships, parenting, and popular culture. In fiction, she seeks urgent storytelling with characters who compel and propel. For memoir—including femoir and himoir—she wants to be transported into worlds rarely or newly observed.

    Workshops

“Master-Pitch Theatre.” Your pitch is a performance. Hone on-page and in-person elements; craft a 200–250 word description; avoid “Querial Killers”; and create coming attractions that whet agents’ appetites.

“Getting Ready • Getting Read • Getting Readers.” From concept incubation to Page One hooks, proposals, query letters, selling points, submission strategies, and author–agent–editor dynamics.
