Rachel is the Director of Journalism Initiatives with the National Press Foundation in Washington, DC.
She spent two decades as a journalists with outlets like the St. Petersburg Times, the Detroit Free Press, and National Public Radio before heading to East Africa as a journalism trainer and consultant. She spent 8 months living in Northern Uganda for Internews and then almost 9 years living in Nairobi Kenya, first for the International Center for Journalists and then as a communications consultant.
Jones has also freelanced for National Geographic and consulted for the Aspen Institute. For the National Press Foundation, Jones directs the Widening the Pipeline fellowship program for early career journalists of color, the Future of the American Child journalism fellowship and the Covering Rare Diseases program for international journalists.
